It remained a popular attraction for urban explorers, ghost hunters, and vandals until it was finally torn down in 2018. The Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum first opened its doors to patients in 1863 in West Virginia. In its final years many of the buildings were abandoned even though a few remained in use, and the entire property was finally decomissioned in 2007. Numerous nurses are said to have committed suicide in the hospital throughout its operation. Visitors have reported hearing a young girl humming a song, being touched and having their hair pulled, loud bangs, doors slamming, whispers and screams. It was later used to serve the mentally ill, disabled, and elderly. ![]() Built in 1940, the building was used during WWII to house POWs who were put to work in the fields. The empty, imposing structure of the Sheboygan County Comprehensive Health Care Center is typically mistaken for the Sheboygan County asylum, which was located elsewhere.
